STA Welcomes Second Apprentice

We’re delighted to welcome Louie to the team as our second Level 3 Welding Fabricator apprentice. As a company, we’re passionate about nurturing talent when we can, and Alex, our first apprentice, who is now an exceptional welder, is proof that the apprenticeship system not only creates opportunities but helps develop the skilled people our industry needs.
We’re looking forward to seeing Louie learn, develop, and hopefully follow in Alex’s footsteps. We took this opportunity to ask Louie why he felt the apprentice route was right for him.

Why an apprenticeship instead of staying at school?

"I’m much better at learning by doing rather than sitting in a classroom. University was never on my agenda as I’ve always wanted to learn a real trade, earn while I learn, and get a proper head start on my career.”

Why choose STA Technical?

“I like the idea of custom fabrication and the different opportunities this presents rather than working as process welder on a factory line. Knowing that Warren, the MD, started as an apprentice back in New Zealand, was a real plus to me as he understands what it is like to work your way up.”

Having started in early September, how have your first few weeks been?

"It’s been really great – but a massive change from being at school. There’s so much to take in. Everyone's been really welcoming and helpful and it’s great to also have Alex, STA’s first apprentice, as my mentor, showing me the ropes and helping me become more confident. I’ve also quickly grasped the benefits of using a day book to record everything I do and learn.”

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise your new colleagues and readers of this newsletter?

“I like doing Army Cadets and MMA because they’re both challenging but in different ways. Cadets is good for teamwork, learning new things and being part of a group, whereas MMA gives me a chance to let off some energy and I like being in an environment where almost anything goes.”
